London, UK: “Kim's Convenience” will have a second run in London

Tuesday, June 25, 2024

Kim’s Convenience will run at Riverside Studios following its European premiere at London’s Park Theatre earlier this year.

The comedy-drama, which inspired the CBC and Netflix show of the same name, will run at the West London venue from September 5 to October 26, with press night on September 11.

It follows a Korean family-run convenience store and explores first-generation immigrant values, with writer Ins Choi set to reprise his starring role as Appa in the Riverside’s revival.

Choi, whose own experiences inspired the production, said he was "pleasantly surprised that British audiences resonated so much with [the] play", adding: "I can’t wait to share it with a whole new audience this time".

In a piece for The Stage in January, Choi reflected on the impact of the European premiere Kim’s Convenience, which he said helped to address a lack of representation of East Asian stories onstage and combat stereotypes.

Director Esther Jun commented on the announcement of the play’s transfer to Riverside Studios: "Kim’s is a true generational play with so much heart, truth and laughter. It’s such a gift to see how it continues to resonate for different cultures and ages at different times in people’s lives."

Audiences at Riverside Studios will also be able to experience a pop-up Korean food store in the venue’s foyer, as family-owned chain Seoul Plaza is set to sell snacks and drinks before and after performances.

Adam Blanshay, Kim’s Convenience’s producer, said: "The play’s universal message resounds so deeply, and every audience member leaves the theatre feeling a personal connection to the legacy that encapsulates the Kim family journey. Come laugh, cry and eat!"

The play’s autumn run in the UK precedes a homecoming to Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre in January 2025, 14 years after it premiered there.

Full cast and creative team are still to be announced.
